On the Frontlines of the Culture War

This project aims to shine a light on the crucial role school librarians play in nurturing young minds and promoting literacy. In the current political climate, where lawmakers in right-wing states are attempting to ban books and cut library funding, it is more important than ever to celebrate those who work tirelessly to provide children with access to books, information and ideas.

For this project, I visited each public school in Des Moines, Iowa to capture portraits of the librarian in their respective spaces. I wanted to showcase both the individuals who devote themselves to this essential profession along with the spaces that they inhabit.

Through these images, I hope to convey the message that school librarians are more than just bookkeepers; they are educators, mentors, and advocates for intellectual freedom. The photographs serve as a reminder that, even in a time of political turmoil, there are people in our communities who are dedicated to fostering a love of reading and learning in our youth.

Ultimately, my goal is to use these photographs as a call to action to protect school libraries and the freedom to read. It is my hope that by presenting these portraits, viewers will be inspired to support their local libraries and stand up against censorship and book banning.
